Susan Emma (Harris) McCulley, “Sue", born August 7, 1917 and passed away April 12, 2021. Sue was a resident of Springfield, Delaware County, PA for 57 years before moving to Granite Farms Estates Retirement Community, Media, PA in 2007. She was born in Philadelphia to Arthur S. Harris and Albertina (Walter) Harris on August 7, 1917. She graduated from Olney High School and Pierce Jr. College. Before her marriage, she enjoyed horseback riding, skiing and sailing as well as gardening. She was employed at General Electric Co. and later at Atlantic Refining Co. as a secretary, where she met her late husband, Hugh Louis McCulley. They were married 46 years prior to his passing in 1990. They shared a love of adventure and drove from Springfield to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in 1973 when Hugh retired from Atlantic Refining in order to see the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Sue lovingly cared for Hugh until he passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 1990.
They raised two sons, William of Springfield, PA and Richard of Seattle, Washington and one daughter, Kathleen Tucker of Glen Mills, PA. During her child-rearing years, she served as a den-mother, cub scout leader, and girl scout leader. She packed and delivered “Meals on Wheels” for over twenty years and was a longtime member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Springfield, PA., worshipping and serving in many capacities. She continued to enjoy many sports with her late husband Hugh including bowling and golf. Her love of bowling began at the age of 18 when her father first taught her and continued at Granite Farms later in life. Her love of golf persisted well into her nineties when she was still able to beat her children and grandchildren at miniature golf on Ocean City’s boardwalk. She was an avid Philly sport’s fan and even went to a Phillies game for her 96th birthday. She had a love of travel and planned many trips with her family. However, her favorite place in the world was Ocean City where she owned a home and spent many a happy summer on the beaches and in the water with family.
Sue is survived by sons, William and Richard (Kathleen) McCulley, daughter, Kathleen (James) Tucker, grandchildren, Kelly Tucker, Jason (Heather) Tucker, Kimberly (Jason) Lubar, and Miles McCulley.
