Susan Cortese Obituary

The Heart of Our Family

Susan “Sue” Cortese (nee Goate), 72, of North Wildwood, NJ passed away on January 8, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Philadelphia, raised in Clifton Heights; Susan spent most of her years residing in the Briarcliffe section of Glenolden before moving to North Wildwood to enjoy retirement.

Susan was born on September 11, 1952 to the late James and Maragret Goate. She grew up alongside her late brother James and sisters Margaret and Diane. Sue and Margie shared a tight bond that continued through the years, they were inseparable and created so many delightful memories together. They were true best friends.

Sue married the love of her life, Basil “Sonny” Cortese on March 8, 1975, they were just shy of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sue was a loving and caring wife, cherished mother and adored mom-mom. Her gentle spirit and ever-present smile left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Sue was known for her friendly demeanor, unconditional love, and her unyielding willingness to lend a hand whenever there was a need.

Susan was the mother of her three wonderful children, Richard (Alexandra), Steven (Megan) and Lauren (Al). Her life revolved around them, she was the center of their world and so proud of each one of them. Susan’s most favorite title was mom-mom. She was the proud mom-mom to Claire, Richie, Daniel, Charlie, James & Alex. She loved spending time with them, watching them play sports and enjoy their favorite activities. Her most favorite thing to do with them was jump the ocean waves and build sandcastles at the beach.

Susan was a dedicated employee and truly enjoyed waking up to go to work each day. She made some great friendships and memories along the way. Susan worked as an administrative assistant at Widener University, where she created some lasting friendships and loved interacting with the students on campus. She also worked as a Human Resource Specialist for the Department of the Navy, retiring after 20 years of service. After retiring, she spent her time volunteering, watching her grandkids, and line dancing with friends. She especially loved to take walks with her husband along the North Wildwood sea wall.

Susan will be deeply missed by many, especially the family and friends she leaves behind, but her memory will live on forever.
