Robert J. Methlie, Sr.

Robert J. Methlie, Sr. passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community. 

The son of the late Justus and Elizabeth (McNally) Methlie, Robert was the beloved husband of the late Patricia (O’Toole) Methlie. He was a devoted father to Robert (Christine), Michael (Michael), Joseph, William (Denise), and Thomas (Donna). A cherished Pop-Pop, he adored his grandchildren: Joseph, Robert (Jessica), William (Mackenzie), Matthew, Zachary, Kristen, Jake, Patrick, Kayleigh, Christopher, and Matteo. He was also an adoring Great Grandpop to Lucas Robert. Robert is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth "Lynn" McCusker (late Andy) and Florence "Flossie" O’Brien (late John). 

Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Robert graduated from South Philadelphia High School before serving his country as a proud Army veteran. He built a successful career as Superintendent of Construction and Repairs at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1998. In retirement, he continued working at Holy Child Academy in Drexel Hill and as a crossing guard for Upper Darby Township. 

Robert met the love of his life on the beach in Margate, NJ. Married in 1964, he and Patricia built a beautiful life together, raising five sons. A dedicated father, he coached various sports teams and was a longtime bingo caller for St. Charles Church. He was also a Fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus De La Salle 590. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family—attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, celebrating family gatherings, and cheering on his favorite teams, including the Phillies, Villanova basketball, and the Super Bowl champion Eagles. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3422 Dennison Ave., Drexel Hill, PA, followed by his Funeral Mass at 12:30 PM. Burial will take place at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Walk to End Alzheimer’s through the Alzheimer’s Association at 399 Market St., Suite 250, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
