Rev. Joseph J. Meehan

Reverend Joseph J. Meehan, Pastor Emeritus St. Eugene Church, Primos, PA, Entered into Eternal Life on Saturday March 30, 2024.  He was 90 years old.

Father Meehan was born in Philadelphia, PA.  He is the son of the late James and Loretta (nee Donnelly) Meehan and brother of the late Rev. Msgr. James H. Meehan, Rev. Msgr. Francis X Meehan, John Meehan, Michael Meehan and Margie Hughes.  He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and will be tremendously missed by all the parishioners of St. Eugene and St. Francis churches.

Father Meehan attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, and was a  1951 St. Joseph Preparatory School Graduate before entering St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, graduating in 1957  He was ordained  May 13, 1961, at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter & Paul, Philadelphia by His Eminence, John Cardinal Krol.  Father also earned his MA in 1970 from LaSalle University and his MS in 1984 at Hahnemann University.

Father Meehan began his priestly service as Parochial Vicar at St. Agnes in West Chester in 1961.  From 1963-1971 Parochial Vicar, St. Thomas Aquinas, Croydon.  From 1963-1971, he was part of the Faculty at Cardinal O’Hara H.S. in Springfield, PA.  Frm 1971-1976, he was the Parochial Vicar, Most Blessed Sacrament.  From 1976-1977 Parochial Vicar, Our Lady of the Rosary, Philadelphia.  From 1977-1989 Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua, Philadelphia.  From 1989-2008 Pastor of St. Eugene Church in Primos, PA.  From 2006-2008 he served as Senior Parochial Vicar at St. Matthias Church in Bala Cynwyd, PA.  From 2008-2023 he resided at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Springfield. 

In all of his positions, Father Meehan created long lasting friendships and was known for his sincerity and kindness to everyone he served.  Father Meehan’s disposition was warm and genuine.  He had a way of making you feel special.  He was loved by many and will be very missed.           

Members of the Clergy, relatives and friends are invited to The Reception of the body, 4:30 pm Monday, April 8, 2024 in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 136 Saxer Avenue, Springfield, PA, followed by his Viewing from 5-7 pm.  A Parish Mass will follow at 7pm.  Mass can be Livestreamed via St. Francis of Assisi Facebook Page.  On Tuesday April 9, 2024 a Viewing will be held in St. Eugene Church, 200 S.
