Michael Schanne Jr. Obituary

Michael T. Schanne, Jr., 42, formerly of Newtown Square, passed away suddenly near his home in Portland, OR on June 8, 2020.

Born in Lake Forest, IL, Michael was the son of Michael T. and the late Barbara (Heavey) Schanne.  Beloved brother of Kathleen Wiler (John) and cherished uncle to two nieces. Michael is predeceased by brother William F. Schanne. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mike attended St. John Neumann elementary school.  He later graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in 1995 and The University of Rhode Island in 1999.

Growing up, Mike was involved in and loved all sports especially ice hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, and golf. From a young age, he perfected his smooth swing at Rolling Green Golf Club.  He competed in junior golf events throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond.

His success on the links earned him a scholarship to The University of Rhode Island, where he was a four-year letterman.  After graduation, Mike returned to Philadelphia to work at the Golf Association of Philadelphia for one year before taking on the role of Director of Competitions with the Pennsylvania Golf Association.  He handled the day-to day administration of the Association’s 11 statewide championships and was proficient in the rules of golf.

Mike spent the next decade with the PGA of America in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.  He served as a Championship Manager for the PGA Junior Series.  He was the Tournament Director for 87 tournaments in 26 states.  Mike was the Championship Director for the 2016 Junior Ryder Cup; 2017 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship; 2017 Girls Junior PGA Championship and 2017 Boys PGA Championship.  He was also part of the PGA of America senior staff for multiple PGA Championships and Ryder Cup competitions.

In 2018, he moved west to work in the golf events division of Lagardere Sports in Beaverton, OR.  He was part of a team that managed several PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events.

He was a doting uncle who shared his love for the Philadelphia Eagles and Stars Wars with his two nieces.

Mike’s loyalty, friendship, hard work, humor, and warm smile will never be forgotten.
