Matthew Koenig Obituary

Matthew Koenig, age 55, of Media, passed away on July 12, 2021 of complications from kidney disease.

Matt is survived by his devoted wife, Maria (née Adolph) and his beloved children, Nikole and Jakob. He is also survived by his parents, Richard and Jacqueline Koenig (née Spade) and sister, Tanya (née Koenig) Trinkle (Phil).

Matt was raised in Whitehall, PA and was a 1984 graduate of Whitehall High School where he was remembered as a talented artist and loved playing on the Zephyrs basketball and baseball teams. Matt studied engineering at Drexel University and architecture at Temple University. He was a Principal Architect at Barton Partners and previously worked at JKR Partners. Buildings Matt designed can be seen in multiple states and all over Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Matt was incredibly devoted to his clients and loyal to his engineer construction friends. With these same friends and colleagues, he was an active member of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects, helping to organize the annual golf outing, as well as a member of the historic Carpenter’s Company of Philadelphia and the Delaware Indian Group.

Matt and Maria celebrated their wedding reception at Springhaven Country Club and Matt became a long time member. He spent his happiest times golfing with his foursome friends and teaching Nikole and Jake to golf. He enjoyed meals and the pool with Maria’s dad, sister and her family. Matt designed much of the interior space at Springhaven along with the recent outdoor patio and new pool house and cabana. He loved visiting the Pocono area, New Hampshire and especially Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine with their dearest friends.

When his children were younger, Matt coached Media Little League, Media Girls Softball, and Media Hoops. He joked that he even learned to enjoy watching his kids play soccer and lacrosse. Matt was also always tremendously proud of Nikole’s and Jake’s many academic accomplishments and their kindness and compassion for all people and animals.

Those that knew Matt well, will not be surprised to hear that he wanted to have a very small, private funeral service. Maria, Nikole and Jake would like you to use the time you would have spent at the funeral, enjoying your loved ones. They hope you will research more about living and deceased organ donation and if so moved, please register to give the gift of life to another family.

In lieu of flowers, Maria’s family has set up a memorial fund to assist the children with tuition and other expenses. Contributions can be made out to Maria Koenig and mailed to Elaine Falls 110 Mockingbird Ct Swedesboro, NJ 08085 or made directly through Venmo @Koenig-FamilyFund.
