Marie A. (Bertsch) Rodgers died peacefully at age 100 with her children by her side. Marie was born in southwest Philadelphia and attended West Catholic High School for Girls. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Mullen (Jim) of Conshohocken, and her son, James Haggerty (Gretchen) of Pittsburgh. We thank you for being the best mother any person could hope to have. Her daughter, Janice, sadly died at age 2 in 1952. Marie bravely dedicated herself to raising two children on her own, with help only from her parents, Raymond and Marie Bertsch, and her younger brother, Raymond Bertsch, Jr. She worked full-time and became the first woman to hold the job of Buyer at General Electric’s Aerospace facility in Philadelphia.
Only after her children had graduated college did she remarry. In 1978, Marie married Jack Rodgers, a West Catholic grad and World War II veteran who saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge. Together they had a joyful 30 year marriage. They traveled extensively in Europe, turning complete strangers into lifelong friends. Most of all, they proudly celebrated every family milestone and success, large and small.
Marie is survived by her two children, five grandchildren, Frank Mullen, (Tricia), Christine Niessen (Rob), Jimmy Mullen, Kate Haggerty Kelly (Patrick) and Meg Haggerty, six great grandchildren, Christopher Mullen (Julia), Lauren Mullen, Jack and Andrew Niessen, and Quinn and Trace Kelly, and one great, great grandchild, Clara Mullen. She is also survived by her brother, Raymond (Dolores and son Chuck) of Sun Lakes, AZ and Jack Rodgers’ niece, Mary Jane Stahler of Glen Mills. All are very thankful to be part of the wonderful, loving family that Marie created.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing Monday, December 29, 2025 9:30am St. Kevin Church, 200 W. Sproul Rd. Springfield, PA 19064 and to her Funeral Mass 10:30am In the Church. Burial Holy Cross Cemetery.
