It is with deep sorrow and gratitude that we recognize the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother to so many, and treasured friend, Irene M Dougherty. Irene quietly died surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the age of 87. Irene was born March 22, 1938, in Philadelphia, where she shared her early life with her parents, Irene and Irvin, and her beloved sister, Marjorie. She graduated from Saint James Elementary School and West Catholic High School. Her working career focused on caring for children. As a third-grade teacher, a childcare provider in her home, and a nanny, she nurtured, mothered, and loved many.
On June 18, 1960, Irene married her loving and devoted husband, who pre-deceased her in death, John Dougherty, and began her most treasured role as mother to their five children, Irene (Sandi), Marylou (Jay), John, Jr. (Wendy), Daniel (Suzie), and William. She leaves behind twenty-two cherished grandchildren, Lindsay (Stephen), Connor (Janessa), Maya, Jack, Brian, Kara, Danny, Shannon, Jonathan, Joshua, Melahnie, Teli, Lauren, Justin, Jillian, Casey, Lexus; and great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Jackson, and Lena. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Pete, her sister-in-law Kate, and many nieces and nephews. Irene will always be remembered for her unwavering love and commitment to her family and friends. She was the heart of our family and taught us the true meaning of love.
A service to celebrate the life of Irene will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 2130 Franklin Avenue, Morton, PA 19070. Her Viewing will begin at 10 am, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11 am. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in Irene Dougherty’s memory to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
