Gertrude M. "Gert" (McMonagle) Dougherty

Gertrude M. "Gert" (McMonagle) Dougherty, 80 of Clifton Heights, PA passed away peacefully on May 1, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Kelly) McMonagle of Fairmount section of Philadelphia, PA. Married to Bruz for 50 years, Gert was a kind, giving, loving, hardworking Mother, Grandmother and friend.  No family gathering or party was ever too big for their row home.  “The more the merrier” was a family motto.  Gert loved the holiday family gatherings.  Her favorite was Thanksgiving, packing in all children, spouses and grandchildren.  Dinner table was set, including an extra “St Eugene’s table” every year for two shifts of one family gathering. 

Along with raising nine children, Gert ran the St Eugene’s CYO for many years, was a waitress at Stouffer’s restaurant in the city while her family was young, then spent most of her years at the Department of Revenue for Pennsylvania, from which she retired. 

No matter where she worked, Gert always found the person who needed her help.  There was always someone who was “down on their luck” or just didn’t have anyone and needed some help.  And help she did, always. 

Her beautiful smile, love and kindness will be greatly missed by all, especially her children who loved her so.  Our hearts are heavy, but in our hearts she will forever remain.

She was the devoted mother of Karen (David) Schieler, Sharon (James) Mulgrew, Charles "Bruz" (Lisa), Shawn (Debora), Kevin (Carolynne), Joseph (Kathryn), Theresa (Robert) D'Antonio, Nancy (David) Tierney and Heather (Leonard) DeStefano. Loving grandmother to 28 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Sr. Regina Carmel McMonagle, OSF and brother, Robert McMonagle, Sisters-in-law Sarah Leahan and Dorothy (Francis) Kmat and many nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing Friday, May 7, 2021 5pm O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd. Springfield, PA 19064 and Sat. morning 9:30am Holy Cross Church, 651 E. Springfield Rd. Springfield PA 19064. Funeral Mass Sat. 10:30am in the Church. Burial SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
