C. Patricia 'Patty' Turner Obituary

C. Patricia (Patty) Turner, formerly of Collingdale, and most recently a resident of St. Martha’s in Downingtown, went to her eternal home on July 7th at the age of 90. Born on February 23, 1930 in Southwest Philly, Patty was the daughter of Herbert and Katherine Davenport of Upper Darby. She was happily married for 67 years to James ‘Jimmy’ Turner.

Patty was a 1946 graduate of West Catholic High School. She then spent the rest of her life explaining to people what exactly was a “Burr.”

She married her Jimmy on June 6, 1953 and then both soon took up residence in Collingdale where Patty worked in the cafeteria at Harris Elementary school for over 30 years. To keep herself busy after retiring, Patty started volunteering at the Delaware County Memorial Hospital. Her volunteer work at DCMH lasted for 16 years. Patty never drove, so there were many days that she would take two forms of transportation, in the snow and other forms of bad weather to the Hospital, so that she would not miss giving some cheer and happiness to the people suffering there. Her volunteer work at the Hospital was central to her life, as she was always looking to help someone less fortunate, even though Patty had little. The one thing that Patty did have was an infectious laugh that could be heard well in advance of wherever she was going. The many care givers at St. Martha’s were often heard to say, as they passed by Patty, “let’s hear that laugh.” One would hear her laugh and their day would instantly be brightened.

Patty had endless love and pride in her three children, Michael P. (Patty) of Mount Airy, Md., James M., Jr., Esq. (Gail), of West Chester, Pa., and Bridget A. Knapp (Dr. J. Michael), of Lincoln University, Pa. She always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren, Michael Turner (Jill), Amanda Walter (Jason), Erinn McMillan (Corey), Colin Turner, Kendall Turner, Josh Knapp, and Ciara Knapp. She also cherished being a great-grandmother to Ridgley, Cabry, and Brooks Turner.

Patty was preceded in death by her third son, Francis and her four sisters, Sally Davenport, Mary Lou Thomas, Joann Hutton, and Claire O’Donnell.

Patty loved the Jersey Shore, where she spent every summer growing up with her family in Stone Harbor and spending many nights on the pier at the old Shelter Haven. Once she started her family, though, all her summers were spent at the Collingdale Swim Club, which was literally in her back yard. Every summer day, for more than 30 years, she would walk through her back yard onto the pool grounds and spend the day with her friends and family.
