Walter Schalleur Obituary

Walter T. Schalleur passed away on November 5, 2019 in Springfield, PA. at the age of 98, surrounded by family and friends. Walt was born in Philadelphia, Pa on August 2, 1921.  He was the son of Katie (Wenke) and Frank Schalleur.

Just after Southern High School, he met Katharine Barnes and in 1942, they married, and he was off to basic training for four years service in the Army Air Corp.  His service time includes being recognized as a top performer and was singled out to be a Communications Instructor to the “90n day wonders” on the Yale campus. Additional travel in this interest included to Harding Louisiana and Abilene, Texas.

He was on a ship headed to Okinawa when the first A-bomb was dropped. So instead, he arrived on Tinian Island in the Pacific Theatre in September 1945, and was mustered out in June of 1946 at Fort Dix, N.J.

After the War, he and Cassie lived in Delaware County. Walt graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University) in 1950 using the GI Bill.

A job with DuPont Corporation was offered.  He accepted and spent almost 40 years before retiring. He was a Lead Project Engineer for them, was appointed as the DuPont representative on the Atomic Energy Commission, and served honorably in this capacity.

Walt and Katharine bought a home in Springfield in 1950. After an immediate move to Martinsville, VA, and moving around to various DuPont projects in others states, they settled happily again in Springfield in 1955 just after the birth of their fourth child.

Throughout Walt and Cassie’s lives, ballroom dancing has been their happiest hobby, and traveling with their buddies, their entertainment. They have expanded their views on changing world situations in several nations, from the British Isles to the Middle East. He has also acted as a Eucharistic Minister in his later years.

His children, Maryann, William, Denise and Walter Kevin were educated in Delaware County and local Schools: specifically, Immaculata University, Penn State, Temple, Villanova, and West Chester, and his grandchildren, and now great grandchildren, are looking to attend as well.

Walter has been the “go to” guy for family and friends from his earliest years.  He has cared for family and friends when ill, and took care of Cassie when she became ill. His children respect and love him. His   trusted and true advice will be sorely missed but we know he will always be with us.

Walt was the devoted husband of the late Katharine D. (Barnes), loving father of Maryann C. Schalleur, William J. (Kathleen) Schalleur, Denise S. (the late Stanley) Klein and Walter K. (the late Linda) Schalleur; cherished grandfather of Christopher, Ilona, David, Ashley & Andrew and great grandfather of Julia, Ryan, Emily, Bailey, Andi Marie & Duke.
