Joseph Patrick Dougherty, 72 of Newtown Square, formerly of Upper Darby, Pa, passed away after a lengthy illness on July 26, at Coatesville VA Hospice.
He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa, son of the late Edward and Olive (Fish) Dougherty . Joe served in the Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was a member of the Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons International Association Local 592 - Eastern Pa for over 50 years, and a member of the American Legion Post 214 Upper Darby for over 50 years. Joe was also an honorary member of Upper Darby Fire Company No. 3. In addition, Joe was a friend of Bill W's for 42 years.
Joe was pre-deceased by his brothers, Edward Dougherty,, Daniel, and Francis and his daughter Christina Hazelton Dougherty.
Survivors: His beloved wife, Susanne (Sue,) and his cat, Precious, his step children Gina Vaul (Anthony), and Anthony Benek (Allison) and two grandchildren, Lily and Natalie, his brothers, John (Mary), James, and sister-in-law Carol Dougherty, Godchild Christine, many nieces and nephews, and many friends of Bill W and Lois W.
Joe enjoyed traveling with his wife and adored his cat "precious" he helped many people to achieve sobriety.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation, Thursday August 1, 2019 9:00am St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073 and to his Funeral Mass Thursday 11:00am in the Church. Burial St. Denis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations appreciated to Coatesville VA Hospice, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville, Pa. 19320. Please specify Joseph P.
